On July 12-14th, the NCPSO hosted its Second Annual Family Reunion Parent Leadership Conference and Capitol Hill Day. In Washington, DC, parent leaders from across the country gathered to discuss how to be effective advocates for public school options and hear from leaders in our movement and meet with leading policymakers. Arriving Sunday night, attendees gathered at the hotel to mix and mingle, get to know one another and share stories and experiences from their states. Monday morning's program was highlighted by guest speakers like Wisconsin's Rose Fernandez giving a presentation titled "Parent Power Matters" and a review of the success of parents rallying at state capitols.
At lunch the NCPSO was proud to be joined by Dean Kern from the US Department of Education to discuss the status of charter schools and virtual schools in our nation. Following Kern, attendees also received an interactive lesson from Jane Ferris, NCPSO's American Pioneer Teacher of the Year award winner. The afternoon consisted of educational panels made up of coalition members from several states. Topics ranged from recruiting new parents and social networking to media messaging. Attendees also learned about recruiting champions and allies in support of public school options, and coalition management 101.
That evening, the fun began. Attendees were treated to a networking dinner and an after dark tour of the Capitol grounds and the monuments on the National Mall. Tuesday, parent leaders split into teams and went to the new U.S. Capitol visitor center to learn more about the federal issues impacting charter schools and on-line education. While on the Hill, coalition members met with Members of Congress and their staffs. Attendees told their members of Congress why they are thankful for their public school options and encouraged them to support any future legislation that would preserve access to charter, virtual, and magnet schools across the country.
That night everyone returned home, reflecting on what they had learned while in Washington and planning for the activities of their coalition in the year ahead. Thanks so much to everyone who attended the Second Annual Family Reunion, and to those who made it possible. We look forward to seeing everyone next year!
