Providing students with a high-quality education that prepares them for the future is the goal of nearly every school system in the country. But what do you do if the traditional school system fails to address the needs of a child? In order to ensure every child is given their equal shot at a brighter tomorrow, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels signed into law the creation of the nation's largest school voucher program.

Since the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, the Huffington Post reports that nearly 4,000 students have moved from their neighborhood brick and mortar public school into private institutions. Students that previously were zoned to public schools due to where they lived now have choices when it comes to their education.

"Hoosier parents are more empowered than ever before in our state," remarked State Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett in a statement released by the Indiana Department of Education on year one of the Indiana Choice Scholarship program. "Demographics do not determine a child's ability to grow academically and should not determine the education opportunities offered to any student."

A student should not be forced to stay in a school that is repeatedly failing them. On average, over one million US students each year do not graduate with their peers. 7,000 students drop out of school each day nationally. This is absolutely unacceptable. It is obvious that the schools have failed these students. While the traditional school system may work for some students, for those that the system fails, they deserve options.
