There is much controversy right now in Racine, Wisconsin, regarding Gov. Scott Walker's proposal to expand the voucher school program by eliminating the low-income requirement and including more cities and schools. In addition to receiving support from many school officials, parents, and teachers, a recent year-long study was done comparing Milwaukee voucher school students and Milwaukee Public School students revealed that the voucher school programs graduated 20% more students than the traditional public school programs. This report also found that vouchers save the government money.
As taxpayers, all parents should have the right to send their child to the school that best fits their educational needs. If the local school district is not working for them, a student should not be barred from a quality education because of where they live. Traditional school advocates need to realize if they directed their attention to raising the standards of their schools, maybe parents wouldn't have to look elsewhere for a quality education for their children. Until the teachers unions, school districts, etc. realize this, parents must continue to fight to ensure that their hard-earned money is going to a school that will actually benefit their child's future.
