The Times-Herald reports hundreds of Georgia families, students, teachers and supporters with the group Georgia Families for Public Virtual Education rallied at the Capitol to let legislators know just how important school options are to them. Families were also able to hear from Georgia Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers, Representative Alisha Thomas Morgan, Kelly McCutchen of the Georgia Public Policy Foundation and Mark Peevy from the Georgia Charter schools Commission. All four speakers praised Georgia's online public charter schools and made clear the importance of school choice.
Senate Majority Leader Rogers told the cheering crowd, "Some of my colleagues talk about the fact that there should only be one model and one system. Well that's crazy... We know that all children are created differently by God. They all have different needs, they all have different desires, and sometimes they need different settings."
Families were also sure to tell Legislators that their children deserve the $5,800 per student funding amount recently decided upon by the Georgia Charter Schools Commission. As the article reports, "The state's Charter School Commission recently concluded that the online schools should get $5,800 per student, but then the House of Representatives passed a budget for next year setting the figure at $5,200. While the House amount would be a boost, the parents are pushing for the full figure set by the commission."
