School choice just got one step closer to being a reality for Iowa students last week, thanks to legislation introduced in both chambers of the state's legislature.
House Bill 517 and Senate Bill 3009 would open up access to charter schools, online education, and innovative learning models, giving parents options when it comes to their child's education, and ultimately their future.
In a release Thursday, Iowans for Public School Options, the NCPSO's Iowa Chapter, released a statement in support of the legislation. "Iowa has a tradition of pride in its quality public education system," said Brian Kennedy, Chairman of Iowans for Public School Options. "Giving parents choice through public school options will help Iowa to once again be a leader in education and ensure every Iowa student is getting the best education available.
"We support the initiatives to expand school choice found in this legislation," he continued.
Students would be guaranteed options as multiple authorizers would be able to compete to open charters across the state. Schools would also be eligible to better utilize innovative technologies to better serve students though increased waiver authority.
In advance of the 2012-2013 academic year, both k12, Inc. and Connections Academy have announced they will offer virtual public schools for Iowa students looking for an innovative alternative to their traditional brick and mortar school.
Iowa Virtual Academy (IAVA), in partnership with the Clayton Ridge Community School District, says they are currently accepting applications for students grades k-6. The school will utilize k12 curriculum and services, offering students an individualized and high-quality, tuition-free, public education.
Iowa Connections Academy (IACA) also said they will be opening in the fall for students grades k-12. Like IAVA, IACA offers families a high-quality, highly accountable, tuition-free, public education. Offered in partnership with the CAM Community School District, IACA utilizes the curriculum and services provided by the Connections Academy program.
Students interested in taking advantage of either program can enroll during the state's open enrollment period in February. The open enrollment deadline is March 1, 2012.
