As students across the Great Lakes State wait with bated breath for the Michigan Legislature to decide their education's fate, parents and educational leaders are joining together to make their voices heard in support of school choice.

Stephanie Hargens, Head of School at the Michigan Virtual Charter Academy, drafted an opinion-editorial this week featured by the Detroit Free Press on the need to lift the constrictive cap on online learning.

"The online school enrollment cap right now is keeping thousands of children trapped on waiting lists, unable to access these innovative public schools," says Hargens.  "Many of these children are dealing with serious situations like bullying or special needs...The qualities of online public schools - individualized learning, flexibility and self-pacing, one-on-one support from teachers, safe environments - is exactly the type of school some children need."

As legislators walked the halls of the capitol today, they heard the names of nearly 5,000 of the 10,000 waitlist students whose futures lie in their hands.    Standing in the Capitol Rotunda, Michigan Virtual Charter Academy students Steven and Charris Smith, read the names of the students hoping an online education will be their solace from the discontent that has become synonymous with their current school.

Students deserve better.  It is time the Michigan legislature stands up for what is right, and supports school choice!
