Testifying before the Michigan House Education Committee this week on Senate Bill 619, Debbie Squires, director of the Michigan Elementary and Middle Schools Principals Association, told a room full of parents that educators know how to best serve children, not parents.

Umm...What?

Educators are constantly calling on parents to be more active in their child's education, calling the lack of parental involvement a primary reason why schools fail.  So during a hearing to expand an educational option rooted in parental participation, Squires speaks out against it?

Parents are responsible for making decisions that affect every aspect of their child's life.  Why should education, one of the most important factors in a child's future, be removed from their hands?

"They [Michigan Elementary and Middle Schools Principals Association] think they know what's better for children than their own parents, and that's what I find upsetting," said House Education Committee chairman Thomas McMillin in response to Squires' claim.

Here's to hoping the Michigan legislature listens to the hundreds of parents filling the statehouse and supports SB 619 next week.
