In Louisiana, Sen. Buddy Shaw is proposing legislation, Senate Bill 46, which would provide school officials greater allowances in offering virtual high school courses. If passed, this landmark legislation would be the first of its kind in Louisiana. The Pelican Post reports that Sen. Gerald Long has been a big proponent of this legislation and believes "online instruction can help 'level the playing field' for all of Louisiana's students. In too many instances, he adds, students are denied access to curriculum necessary for high school graduation and for college preparation."
Although some have expressed concern that this online learning model has not be sufficiently tested, others believe that it will not only modernize Louisiana's teaching methods, but in doing so, it will also help better prepare its students for college and/or their careers. Giving high school students the option of taking these online classes only perpetuates individualized learning and teaches self-motivation, both critical qualities for personal achievement and post-secondary school success.
