Nearly 60 parent advocates from 19 states converged in Washington, DC this week, united to promote and further parent choice and educational options across the country.

The event was in full-swing Monday morning where attendees heard from education reformer Tom Vander Ark. Vander Ark addressed the crowd on the benefits of innovation in the classroom, and the importance of parent voices in advocating for such options for their children.

Michael Horn, co-author of "Disrupting Class" followed Vander Ark providing parents with a little background on disruption, and how online learning can be categorized as such because it is not based on old metrics, models, or boundaries. Horn also noted that "disruptive innovations" such as those programs aimed at credit recovery, drop out recover, and home education will be a tremendous asset to students.

Keynote speaking at this year's event was Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett. Dr. Bennett discussed the importance of school choice, and standing up against the establishment to do what is right. He described his ongoing battles to better schools and increase parent choice in Indiana, which recently lead to one of the most robust education reforms across the country.

In addition to these national education advocates, parents also exchanged ideas and best practices in regards to meeting with legislators, putting on a successful Capitol Day event, and recruitment tactics. The event concluded on Tuesday with attendees meeting with their U.S. Congressional members and staff, putting their newfound knowledge to work.
