As National School Choice Week came to a close last week, families in Wisconsin saw their educational options expand as the legislature passed Senate Bill 2, amending the state's open enrollment timing and options.

Under the new law, which is currently awaiting the signature of Governor Scott Walker (R), the formal application process will be increased from a three week span to three months, and will include provisions that allow for year-round transfers for students unhappy with their current schools.

According to the MacIver Institute, the legislation will have a "significant" impact on regular public schools, in addition to virtual and brick and mortar charter schools in the state.  "This legislation has the potential to dramatically change the education landscape in Wisconsin," the MacIver Institute said in a release on new law.  "By creating a free market within Wisconsin's public schools the new law is expected to foster competition between school districts and increase the influence of parents in areas as far reaching as curriculum development and school operations."

Expanded open enrollment laws put the power in parents' hands, allowing them to choose the education that works best for their children.  If a school is not meeting a child's needs, parents now have the opportunity to take matters into their own hands and choose an educational program that works.

During the newly-expanded open enrollment period, which will run from the beginning of February until the end of April, parents will have the ability to apply to up to three districts.  Families will also learn if their transfer has been approved by June, giving them a shorter waiting period.

The passage of the legislation serves as a great example of the power of parent advocacy.  Supported by the Wisconsin Coalition of Virtual School Families, parents and students made their voices heard every step of the way.  From phone calls to their legislators, to testifying before the legislature, families across the Badger State joined together and the legislature listened!
