2011 has been a great year for school choice in America according to National Heritage Foundation.

From the revival of the previously-defunct D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program in our nation's Capitol, to the approval of the largest voucher program in U.S. in Indiana, myriad school choice programs have been approved over the past year.

The article states that more than two dozen states took the imitative this year to promote school choice for all families.

Below is a brief snapshot of just a few of the legislative measures passed this year.

In Arizona, the legislature passed the Education Savings Account program, which is designed to provide parents with special-needs children with 85 percent of the state per-pupil funding amount to help pay for private school tuition.

Florida passed a measure that will expand virtual education in the state by requiring each district to allow for the creation of virtual charter schools.

There are still numerous measures up for consideration.  S.B. 1 in Pennsylvania, for example, seeks to amend current law to establish an Excess Scholarship Fund, expanding school options to more families in need.

While strides have been made this year, it is not time to give up!  Parents need to hold legislators accountable and ensure that all children have access to a quality education!
