Where a child is born shouldn't determine what kind of educational future that child should receive.  Wisconsin State Representative Dan Knodi (R-24) backed up this sentiment today in an opinion piece appearing on the Monroe Falls Patch.  Rep. Knodi issued his unwavering support for plans to expand the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program, granting low-income students in Milwaukee a better chance at a brighter future.

Applauding efforts such as Assembly Bill 92, which would eliminate the cap on the number of students permitted to enroll in the MPCP, and Assembly Bill 94, which would streamline the way the state receives payments to MPCP choice schools, Knodi said expanding the program would actually help Wisconsin taxpayers.

Knodi supported his argument with evidence obtained through a Legislative Fiscal Bureau study, which found that if MPCP students went back into the traditional school system, other Wisconsin school districts would have lost approximately $172.3 million in general school aids during the 2010-11 school year.   Taxpayers are responsible for covering the bill for $12,284 per student for Milwaukee public school students.  Through the MPCP, taxpayers are only responsible for $6,442.

Hopefully Wisconsin legislators do their math and realize school choice may actually help SAVE taxpayers money!
