Students in Wisconsin are coming out in record numbers to take advantage of the state's open enrollment policy, allowing them to receive an education that best fits their needs.
According to the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, nearly 35,000 students last year looked beyond the walls of their districts for their education. According to the group, three of the five districts with the largest gain of out of district students were home to virtual charter schools.
This report further exemplifies that families are looking for alternatives to their current traditional school system. Districts that are upset about open enrollment and losing revenue students should consider doing something about it, and providing their residents with education options. If a school is continuously failing a student, the district cannot expect that the family is going to happily sit around and watch their child's future suffer.
There are always going to be students and families that are pleased with their current school system, and feel as if they are adequately fulfilling their duty to educate. For those who do not feel their needs are being addressed, they should have options.
All students deserve an equal shot at a bright future, and school choice is necessary in ensuring all children are given their chance.
