There are many reasons why parents choose to send their children to a public school other than their traditional neighborhood school. Here, we will regularly provide you with just some of the stories of families who believe in the power of parents to select the best public school for their children. ---------------
As our daughter approached Kindergarten in 2002, my husband and I considered the available education options. That summer we were intrigued when we heard about the brand-new Idaho Virtual Academy (IDVA). From the first informational meeting, we knew IDVA was the right fit for our family. We were impressed right away by the world-class curriculum, the public-school testing accountability and the expertise offered by state certified teachers who are truly instrumental in her education. Six years later, both our family and our appreciation of the school have grown. Two of our three children are school-aged and they couldn't have more different learning styles, but the program's flexibility makes it work for them both. We couldn't be more pleased with IDVA and plan to stick with it as long as they'll stick with us. -- Briana LeClaire, Idaho --------------- My youngest daughter went to a traditional brick and mortar school for her first two years. She was an advanced reader and learner, but also very unhappy, suffering with a very long class day and lacking challenges. I began seeking a program that would offer her an individualized learning plan and faster pace, so I brought her home for the next two years of her education. In 2001, I found out about the Ohio Virtual Academy (OHVA), attended a parent info session and was impressed by the curriculum and online school model, as well as the exceptional quality of teachers and administrators I met. Now, seven years later, she has completed her 2nd year of the OHVA High School. She also participates in the Ohio Post Secondary Education Option (PSEO) program. Last spring, she passed the Ohio Graduation Test and will be graduating in 2010 from OHVA. She is currently considering majoring in veterinary science. It has been all we could have hoped for and more. -- Christine Beard, Ohio ---------------
All three of my children began their education in a public brick and mortar, year round school. My oldest son completed the 6th grade, my younger son completed the 3rdgrade, and my daughter was enrolled in kindergarten for nine weeks. This setting was not a good fit for my daughter, mostly because of the boredom she experienced in the academics being taught, so I began looking into other public education options. I remember a mom from my son’s baseball team talking extensively about Colorado Virtual Academy (COVA). During my daughter’s 3 week track off from school I researched and attended a COVA parent info session with my daughter. During this info session my daughter and I delved into this fabulous core knowledge curriculum, listened to a power point explaining this unique model of education, and asked many questions; we were both hooked! That school year I learned so much about the educational opportunities and benefits our online public charter school offered. The following school year I enrolled both of my boys in this model. Five years later, I am happy to say that all three of my children are thriving in COVA. They are learning with an individualized learning plan through a rich core knowledge curriculum that makes learning come alive. We have Colorado certified teachers that are highly qualified, as well as a professional and experienced administration team. I want the best possible education for my children, and the Colorado Virtual Academy has exceeded my expectations in providing a world class education for students. -- Lori Cooney, Colorado
