Austin – The Texas Chapter of the National Coalition for Public School Options (PSO-TX) today applauded Governor Abbott’s call for a public school system where the money follows the student, ensuring parents are fully empowered to choose the school that is best for their children.

“Governor Abbott is right to take a stand for parental choice in education, and while we await the details of his plan, we enthusiastically support a funding model where the money follows the student,” said Lora Stegner, lead parent for PSO-TX. “Parent choice is important, and the next step is to remove bureaucratic obstacles to all parent choices, including families that choose public, full-time virtual schools.”

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is currently mis-interpreting statute (Senate Bill 15), and erecting attendance, testing and grading barriers that will lead to thousands of students being kicked out of the virtual school their parents have chosen at the end of this school year.

“Let’s make sure the Governor’s principle, that parents should get to decide, is not undermined by his education commissioner’s misapplication of the law and an Austin-knows-best bureaucratic approach.”
